Ever since the day I had to explain to some moviegoers what they just saw’¦I have had a unique soft spot for Christopher Nolan’¦ The movie was Memento. His follow up was a remake ,Insomnia…and while not a great thriller’¦it showed where his visual style was at. Then ‘œBatman Returns’ and with one film he changed the way a comic book character can be reborn’¦. about as perfect as you could get. While the studio scrambled to sign Chris for the sequel’¦he already had started The Prestige. The Prestige follows two turn of the century Illusionists as they fight for fame. Egos get in the way when a trick goes wrong and the wife of one dies. Now it becomes revenge pic as each one tries to destroy the other’¦just short of killing each other. Being illusionists, the easiest way is to make a better trick’¦or just do the other guys better. When we get to each of their signature tricks’¦we discover a very dark secret about of these truly amazing tricks. A fabulous journey…although a bit slow at times’¦the pay offs are both amazing’¦and dark. Watch for David Bowie as the pivotal character of Tesla’¦a little history’¦and a scary possibility. Visually it was cold and dark’¦much like all of Chris work. Bale and Jackman ARE their parts’¦Scarlett was worthless and Michael ,as usual, perfectly keeps the movie grounded and moving.
