First I want to say thank you to everyone who made my first Mother’s Day extra special. I got lots of well wishes from family and friends, emails from Sandra and Laurie, calls from Dad, Denny & Lynne, eCard from Mom, and flowers from the DeMarcos’™, the Stephens’™, and the Hamilton’s. And a book about motherhood from Aunt Dot, a Mom’s Day card form Kurt, and a knit cap made just for Morgan by honorary Grandma Dini.

I was overwhelmed and touched by everyone who wished me happy Mother’s Day. I think I am just beginning to understand how amazing it is to be a Mom. After everything we went through to get Morgan, it makes it all the sweeter to be here now, we consider ourselves so very lucky to have Morgan, and wish that same joy for everyone! But there are also many wonderful women who haven’t had the opportunity to parent a child of their own, but who have helped to parent other people’s children, and I think those women are just as special and just as deserving of acknowledgment for the love that they so selflessly give to everyone else! So thank you to all the honorary Mom’s & Gramdma’s, Auntie’s, and Step-Mom’s, it takes a village to raise a child, thank you for being a part of our village!

So Morgan has had a rough couple of days.

Monday they went up on his vent settings because his blood gases were high. They also added a new med to his TPN to help with his breathing. Then after lunch they lost his IV, it was leaking so they had to take it out. His nurses tried and tried but could not re-start an IV. So since he had an order for another central line, they decided to wait for that to get put in. So 2 ‘“ 3 hours later he had a new central line and was back on his meds. In the meantime, though, all his vent settings got raised. So he went form 16 breaths per minute (that the machine was doing) up to 36, and oxygen has been hovering at 30 ‘“ 35%.

Today and a little yesterday we began the process of weaning him back down. Today his Rate is at 26 and his Oxygen is at 30%. Just in time for Glenn to come back from being off, and wonder what happened!

I talked to the nurse manager about nurse ratchet. She said she will talk to her, and that there won’t be any hard feelings, and she also agreed that she’™d ask the case managers not to put her on Morgan’s case. She appreciated my feedback, and felt that nurse ratchet would understand and feel bad that she had failed me as a parent. I also asked about having primary care nurses assigned, and she told me I should ask the nurses directly. We have asked one day nurse and one night nurse so far. Both said yes, and will see if they can make it happen. If so, then Holly will be his primary day nurse and Claudia will be his primary night nurse.

Breast Milk Culture came back positive for Staph bacteria. So I am on a 7 day course of antibiotics after which we’™ll do another culture which will hopefully be negative. So Morgan will stay on formula. But the hospital is working on getting a breast milk bank started, so maybe in the future other babies can be on breast milk while their mom’s go through all of this.

They were increasing Morgan’s feedings by one cc every shift. The plan was to stop at 9ccs. But since he is having a bit of trouble digesting the formula (no poop unless they give him a glycerin chip ‘“ he had his first half myconium, half regular poop ‘“ mom and dad are so proud!) and also because of his breathing problems, they are holding him at 6ccs every 3 hours. And boys does he know when it is a half an hour before feeding time, he gets so antsy and starts smacking his lips! And no…thats not Cohri Haas helping out….Just her RN twin.

He has gained 140 grams since they started feeding him. For all of us non metric people that’s 5 ounces, so he is up to about 2lbs 11ozs. A total of 7 ounces of weight gain since he was born!

Also he was looking puffy to me so I kept mentioning it, which got the Dr to look at the x-ray they did when they put the central line in, and sure enough he is retaining fluid again. So he is back on Lasik, and even with that, he gained 25 grams yesterday (instead of losing as expected).
